9. The Desert Adaptations of Botswana

Termites have developed to create some of the most precisely engineered mounds on Earth in Botswana’s semi-arid areas. Usually reaching heights of three to four meters, Macrotermes species build these buildings using unique adaptations for desert survival. Unique moisture-harvesting mechanisms included in the mounds gather and save valuable water from morning dew and sporadic precipitation. While strategic ventilation channels help maintain ideal inside conditions despite the demanding exterior environment, the architectural design features thick walls that offer great insulating against excessive temperature changes.
