8. The Intricate Formations of South African Bushveld

Some of the most complex termite mound constructions found in the South African bushveld are produced by several species including Macrotermes natalensis. Rising to heights of six meters, these mounds have intricate surface textures and patterns used to control inside temperature and humidity. The buildings are especially remarkable for their longevity; they have endured decades of integrity while under harsh weather. Through their large subsurface networks, the mounds also significantly contribute to soil fertility and offer refuge for many species, therefore supporting the local ecology.
