10. The Living Skyscrapers of Zimbabwe


Often referred to as nature’s skyscrapers, Zimbabwe’s termite mounds—especially those in the national parks—are Built by Macrotermes michaelseni and allied species, these remarkable buildings have many spires and turrets and can reach heights of 25 feet (7.6 meters). Comprising royal chambers, fungus gardens, and a sophisticated network of tunnels and ventilation shafts, the mounds are distinguished by their unique internal design. These buildings are so well-engineered that, in spite of outside temperature swings of up to forty degrees, inside temperatures remain within one degree Celsius.
