11. Early December: First Rains

The wet season starts early December, giving guests an opportunity to see the salt flats’ dramatic change. While keeping access to dry places, the first rains produce scattered pools of water across the surface that cause partial mirror reflections. The weather gets more dynamic, with amazing photographic possibilities from occasionally thunderstorms and beautiful cloud formations. Temperatures are nice; during the day, they average about 70°F (21°C), which makes long exploration comfortable. With the possibility to record both reflective surfaces and salt crystal patterns in the same frame, the mix of wet and dry areas offers photographers exceptional compositional possibilities. Particularly among flamingo groups that start to gather in greater numbers, wildlife activity rises noticeably during this season. As flora starts to cover the nearby mountains, their distinctiveness against the white salt surface becomes apparent. Because of weather fluctuations, this season calls for more flexible planning; nonetheless, it rewards guests with unique and spectacular photography opportunities.
